Comfort Bridles – form for function or fashion?

Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:”Table Normal”; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:”"; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0cm; mso-para-margin-right:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0cm; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:”Calibri”,”sans-serif”; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} Over recentyears a new design of bridle has become widely used by riders of alldisciplines and levels.   The name‘comfort bridle’ is used to describe a style of headpiece that differs fromthat of the traditional bridle.   The keyfeatures of the comfort design are a padded, ergonomically curved headpiece andprovision for the noseband strap to run over the top of the headpiece,providing shock absorption and reducing the pressure acting on the poll.   Many ridersreport marked differences to their horses’ way of going when using a comfortbridle as opposed to a traditional bridle design.   To understand the reason why this happens wefirst need to understand the part of the horse’s body that is affected by theheadpiece of the bridle.   All traditionalbridles have a headpiece which sits on the poll of the horse.   The poll is the area directly behind thehorse’s ears; skeletally it is the point where the atlas (C1 vertebra) joinsthe skull.   It is a point where there aremany nerves and also many vital blood supplies, a place that the animal shouldinstinctively want to protect, so it makes sense that it is a very sensitivearea of the horse.   As we know, horsesare flight animals and when a sensitive area, like the jugular region, abdomenor indeed the poll is threatened their natural reaction is to run from thesource of the threat.   When we ride we donot wish for the horse to try to run from the bridle or to respond to thebridle with resistance.   The bridleshould be a connection point which the horse feels comfortable to work into, sothat the rider can connect and ride the horse from the leg to the hand. The headpieceof the comfort bridle is cut to curve away from the horse’s ears and softpadded leather is stitched to the underside of it.   When the ears move to point forward andbackward the soft area behind the ears comes into contact only with the softpadding, eliminating pinching of the ears.   In the traditional style of bridle the noseband strap sits under theheadpiece, meaning that a thin strap is pressed down onto the poll area by theheadpiece.   We know that the forceexerted on a thin rope creates more pressure than the same amount of forceexerted on a thick strap.   The design ofthe comfort bridle means that the headpiece strap lies directly against thehorse with the noseband strap passing over the top.   This simple change means that instead of theforce being exerted on a thin noseband strap, the force is spread over the widerarea of the padded headpiece strap resulting in less pressure being placed onthe poll. As well asgiving the headpiece a larger surface area the padding of the headpieceprovides shock absorbing properties.   Theair present within the padding absorbs some of the energy acting on theheadpiece, lessening the pressure that the horse feels on the poll.   The effect of reducing the pressure on thehorse’s poll can be likened to the difference between someone gently pushingyou with the palm of their hand and someone shoving you.   When we are gently pushed (low pressure), weare more likely to willingly move than when we are shoved abruptly (highpressure).   We all react to a shove byresisting movement, it is a natural reaction.   So with a reduced pressure the horse is more likely to work into thebridle more positively, improving the connection between the rider’s seat andleg aids and the rein aids.   When thehorse feels less pressure, less resistant muscular tension manifests at thepoll and subsequently develops through the back so the horse works morefreely.   There ismuch evidence to suggest that due to their design, comfort bridles can improvethe performance of the horse by a decreasing the pressure felt at the poll bythe horse.   This decrease in pressureleads to a decrease in muscular resistance and improved connection betweenrider’s leg and hand aids as the horse works more positively into thebridle.   This is a case where thedevelopment of a traditional design works to improve the comfort andperformance of the animal by the understanding of the physical and behaviouralfactors.   This is a case where form hasbeen developed to improve function rather than subscribe to fashion forfashion’s sake.
