Review of the Blue Snowflake Compact USB Microphone

There are various relatively popular audio products in the consumer marketplace, some of which are definitely worthy of notice. Many of them have gained considerable acceptance amongst users, and are generally increasing in reputation and growing a sizable and satisfied customer base. A few of these are really outstanding and worth looking into. On the list of relatively popular products on the market which are in the business of USB Microphones is called The Blue Snowflake.

The designers for this quality mic are the outstanding techies at Blue labs. What the Blue Snowflake provides to its growing membership is helping record via USB at a completely affordable price. I’m guessing the cost for two of a good bottle of wine. :)

The microphone itself folds into a case and pops up using the case as a stand. it will fit into a pocket or a purse without crowding.

The microphone is really easy to use via the USB port. No mixers, preamps or phantom-power is needed. All you need is a computer and some decent but rudimentary software.

With all of these features one wonders why the price is as reasonable as it is. As with many obscure and relatively unknowns, Blue Microphones has managed to edge out some of the competing manufacturers.

The main negative aspects to the the Blue Snowflake setup are twofold:

1. The actual sound quality leaves something to be desired, although it’s primary use will be those who are podcasting “VOIPING” or using voice recognition software.

2. As well the fact that there’s no other solution for holding the mic with a stand. For most uses it works out alright but you’re pretty much stuck with having to use the mic sitting on your desktop. (Not you the mic) :)

To sum it all up, The Blue Microphones company has foreseen the consumers demand for these microphones and the need to design and produce a very good product with a lot of really excellent features. The MXL R150 Ribbon microphone uses an aluminum ribbon transducer which by nature is a bidirectional (figure-8) pickup pattern. A figure-8 pattern will pick up sounds from the front and back sides of the microphone with equal sensitivity while maintaining a large amount of rejection 90 off access. The front of the microphone is indicated by the MXL logo where the audio signal is in-phase while the back side has an inverted phase. Ribbon mics typically have a lower output than condenser microphones and may require a preamplifier with a lot of gain. It is highly recommended to use a preamp with low noise, high gain, and an input impedance of 1500 ohms or greater. We strongly advise experimentation with placement and isolation requirements with the gain initially set low to avoid possible equipment (and hearing) damage.

The market size for digital audio interfaces and computer based digital editing has increased in a massive way. With systems available at very low prices, more and more users are utilizing this technology. One of the main problems with many of these systems is the input stage only consisting of unbalanced line inputs or very low (or no mic pre) gain structure for the balanced input stage and the unavailability of phantom power.
